My absolute favourite new (to me) font is Ballpark Weiner. It immediately makes me think of lipstick scrawled on a mirror. It’s curly cursive that isn’t overly thin so each twist and turn is evident. It’s strong but still capable of being very beautiful and feminine. I’ve used it for the ‘Coming Soon’ sign on my domain here.

This Week's Starred Items
I’m notorious for starring things in GReader and going back to them later - particularly when I’m working and don’t have the time to read long articles. So anything that piques my interest is starred. I’m going to start listing those links every week, beginning today.

Table Inspiration
One of my first DIY projects this summer will be painting my dressing table (actually a sofa table that I’ve repurposed). I’ve been stuck on what to do with it since I bought it over a year ago, but I’ve finally come up with a solution. I was concerned about painting the whole thing and not liking the look. It’s solid wood and I just feel guilty about covering it up. So, after stumbling across a great photo from a designer’s portfolio, I’ve decided that I’ll paint the legs black, leaving the top solid wood with the original lacquer. It’ll give it a great country look, match up with my other black furniture pieces, without looking too dominating or making my room too dark.Current Table:

Font Cubes
Font Cubes, a new Web 2.0 site for those of us who are absolutely, utterly addicted to typography, has the potential to be a great resource and tool. The ability to track your favourite fonts and earmark ones that you’ve used in each of your projects is a definite plus for someone like myself who has hundreds of fonts on my hard drive and can’t always keep track of them all - especially the ones with such subtle yet important differences from one another.
However, Font Cubes has announced these features, but has yet to implement them, making FC just another free font website and nothing more than an okay alternative to free font kingpins like DaFont.com.
The layout is clean and uncluttered, and allows you to test each font (and its many variations) in different sizes before downloading. The site is easy to navigate, allowing you to browse by name, popularity, date added, and rating. What it lacks though, is the ability to search by theme, which I think is a much needed addition. Currently you can only sort by font or dingbat.
On the whole, FC could be great. It’s still got a ways to go, but I’ll keep my eye on it. With a couple small changes and implementation of their promised features, it would be a fabulous way to keep track of fonts while on the go and not have to rely on font management programs only accessible from your main computer.

Back to school for design
I successfully registered last night for the Graphic Design & Layout program that I’ve been hemming and hawing over for the last month or so. Honestly, I can’t wait to get back to school for something that I actually enjoy. My parents wanted me to go to university and I ended up wasting a ton of money and never finishing my degree. I listened to that ridiculously pompous guidance counsellor in high school who told me that I didn’t have enough experience to go into journalism or media, and here I am, working in sales & marketing, doing public relations (with published press releases in major industrial mags and websites), writing content for the company website, redesigning the company forms and catalogue, and have a published full-colour advertisement in a national publication. So to all of you who said I couldn’t do it, I stick out my tongue. :P
The first program in my course is likely to be a bit totally easy. It’s ‘Introduction to Desktop Publishing’. *snicker* Highlights are below:
- Grasp the basic concepts of Desktop Publishing
- Fonts
- Basic Design and Layout Techniques
- Understanding basic Image Manipulation Techniques
- Managing Fonts on the Computer
- Document Structure
- Preparing Graphics
- Working with Colour
- Types of Files
- A jumpstart into QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver and HTML
Oh dear. Fonts? I love them! Managing fonts? Install, uninstall, font management programs, got it. Colour. Well, 7 years of art instruction, I’m pretty sure I know the wheel, my complimentaries, secondaries, and tertiaries. Types of files. Oh dear. If you don’t know files types, this is probably not the field for you.
Irregardless, I’m totally looking forward to this, even if the intro is nothing more than a bare bones refresher. After all, it’s just the beginning!

I am absolutely in love with this idea. Not only that, but I have a magnitute of spools/reels at my disposal. The wholesaler that I work for has tons of produc that arrives on these everyday. I know I’ll be able to grab one to try this out. I can’t wait. This is going to be perfect for a seat at my dressing table, which is currently chairless.

» IKEA does away with plastic bags.
Honestly, I think every retailer should do this. It would be a very quick fix to all of the plastic bags that end up in landfills. Instead of giving people the choice, they should just stop providing them altogether. That way, people would automatically be forced to find an alternative option to plastic. Paper and fabric people! It’s the only way to go. Plus it’s much more stylish!

» Dell to make a mini laptop?
I know, I know, I just bought a new laptop (a Dell, infact) in January. A really nice, higher end personal use notebook. But come on, I’m a whore when it comes to Dell products. And this is exciting. Very exciting.

Want. For $59.00, how can you go wrong? I think it’ll be a perfect little balcony or patio set, or even a cheap kitchen table for a tiny little kitchen nook. I love IKEA.
